S#!% Cancer Patients Say

"Laughter is the best medicine."
-Former US Surgeon General Bruce Springsteen on alternative remedies

"While laughter is the best medicine, many cancer patients prefer chemotherapy."
- Oscar Wilde

It's true, cancer patients would probably prefer chemo over a good laugh but the good news is, they don't have to choose!  They can have both.  Yes, chemo and radiation can make it a little tricky at times to do anything other than vomit and sleep but in between, there's always time for smiles and laughter.

Examples around the institute
It can be hard walking past the Jimmy Fund Clinic everyday where Dana-Farber's pediatric patients are treated.  There's something inherently wrong about a 4 year-old battling brain tumors and a 7 year-old dealing with relapsed leukemia.  But then, as I walk past, I look in and see a bunch of smiling, laughing faces.  You can argue that the kids don't understand but in the time I've spent around these kids, I think it may be the adults that don't understand.  Regardless of the course of the disease, it seems that laughing is probably time well spent, especially if it may improve the outcome.

Shit Cancer Patients Say...
So, along those lines, I wanted to share a video created by a cancer patient with a sense of humor.  By now, you are probably all too aware of the viral "Shit _________ Say" videos.  This is yet another one, but in my opinion, is one that is worthy sharing.  As a cancer survivor, I can attest to the fact that everything in this video is real from the temperature changes to the vomiting to the itching to the darn beeping machine.  If you are fortunate enough to not know the intricate details of cancer treatment, I expect that you can still appreciate the humor.

Please, share this with a cancer patient or caregiver and put a little more laughter into their day!
